“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.” ~ Anonymous

once more

Missy and Lois sat with Shero so I could run home and shower. She’d had a full day of visitors, from my BFF Reinette Jones to Uncles Danny and Tony, Aunts Charleen and Sherry, Missy, Lois, and Macie, her BFF Martha Conley and adopted sister Betina Gardner, and church buddies Karen Mays Roseberry, and Amanda and Ralph (I don’t know their last name). It has been a busy social day, ending with fluffy snow when I came back to the hospital. Shero has been much more alert today. Her eyes have been open for a long time. By four this afternoon, we had established a way for her to answer yes-or-no questions by blinking. By the evening, she was able to whisper to Missy that she loved her. She then told me she loved me three times, before she said, “Pain, Pain,” followed by “Water, Water.” She took a few ice cubes, and the nurse administered her pain meds. The words and the water were her first since early Sunday. I am beyond grateful that she was present and able to connect with us today.
