“No matter how stupid you feel, just remember that Little Red Riding Hood couldn’t figure out a talking wolf in drag wasn’t her grandmother.” ~ Unknown
In our office is the library’s old dumbwaiter. It doesn’t work, and hasn’t for as long as I’ve been in the building as an employee, which was 25 years on the 7th of this month. For the most part, it’s ignored because it’s just inside the door, not positioned so that notice is apparent. However, when I walked in the other day, something sitting on the dumbwaiter ledge caught my attention in my peripheral vision. I walked past it several days, waiting to see if it was migratory, as some things in Special Collections tend to be, before I took a closer look. Is it The Dumb Waiter or the friendly gnome? I have a pretty good idea where (who) he came from, and he’s a lovely addition to an otherwise dismissive corner of the room. We won’t get to do things like this when we’re moved out of the building, and that’s disappointing. The people you work with, the people who do cute little things like this, make work worth doing.
