“As soon as you choose you, everything else chooses you, too. This is your season.” ~ Unknown
For several days, I’d noticed a small twig on the outside of the birdhouse. I had hoped it meant someone was taking up residence in it at last. I’ve had the birdhouse for probably 6-8 years, and originally had it under the pine tree, thinking that if I were a bird, I’d want a little shade and protection from its sturdy limbs. Clearly, I am not a bird because not once did I see an avis of any stripe approach the house. A few years ago, Shero asked if she could put the house in her tiny rose garden by the deck. She, too, had no luck attracting the local flocks. When I was building the Robin Dalton Memorial Garden, I brought the tiny birdhouse back to my yard and placed it near the bird baths. Behold, we have a resident at last. A very tiny brown finch, one, no doubt, that saw the potential of the house while hanging out in the nearby fig tree, which the local finch flock adores. Lord Basil and I had stopped the yard work momentarily this afternoon, and seated in the shade of the porch, we observed our new resident quite busy bringing more twigs into the house. This is the only landlording I’m willing to undertake, and I am extremely thankful to be in such a position. EDIT: Friends Stacy and Letha noted that this is a wren, not a finch. Even better!

It’s a Carolina Wren.
