Today, I took a good number of photographs to the West Liberty Wellness Center for a solo exhibit that will hang in the gallery until the 28th of August. None of it would be possible without Pam Meade, not pictured because she has had a week (not in a good way), and this brave crew: Jenny Bell, Sylvia Carter, and Phillip Harmon. These four incredible humans go over and above to bring good art into this space for the community to enjoy, and they really do enjoy it. I was very honored to be asked to present a solo exhibit, and I took care to include a few new prints with a direct connection to Morgan County. It came with a few hitches, but necessity is the mother of invention, and this git-er done bunch got’er done. I grew up with and graduated with Phillip’s first wife, Lana Franklin. Sadly, she died when we were in our early 30s, but Phillip took good care of her and became part of her family. Lana’s father, Lanny, was one of the most prolific photographers I knew and likely has more photographs of West Liberty and Morgan County than anyone else, including Lynn Nickell. Lanny collected cameras, too. As I was leaving, Phillip gifted me the camera he’s holding. It is one of Lanny’s Nikon FE2 cameras. Using the method I found in this YouTube video, I’ve determined that this camera was manufactured in March 1984, nearly a year after Lana and I graduated from high school. Lord only knows how many rolls he shot of our little town with this camera. I was honored to be asked to show my work in my hometown, but I was bowled over by the gift of Lanny’s camera. I don’t know what I did to deserve it, but I’m sure glad I did it.
