“Not every beautiful thing announces itself.” ~ Unknown
I’ve passed this tree outside Young Library hundreds of times over the last 25 years, but only today did its shining blue-hued bark catch my eye. Honestly, it was stunning in the late afternoon sun. I didn’t know what kind of tree it was until I got home and looked it up on UK’s Urban Forest Initiative. This project has a great tree plotter that shows the name, genus, species, and photos of thousands of trees around Lexington. I was able to identify the tree by its location. Deselecting all the trees except the Kentucky Coffee Tree, I found there are 63 such trees plotted around town. If you want to see more of this particular tree, zoom in to the land around Young Library and click the green-ish dot nearest the parking lot. All those green-ish dots are Kentucky Coffee Trees, but this one on this day at this particular time was stunning.
