“Not every change is a loss.” ~ Unknown
I was at Hutchins Library at Berea College today. Head of Special Collections Tim Binkley (right) was a generous host who gave me the $10 tour. It’s a wonderful space, warm and inviting as soon as you walk in- the way a library should feel. The Special Collections has an impressive amount going for it, like the bell hooks and Janis Ian collections, but more importantly to me is their primary collecting focus on Appalachia. That’s extremely valuable to me and to thousands of Appalachian scholars. Tim and I are on the Appalachian Studies Association Special Collections committee together, and we had a wonderful conversation about many, many things today, talking well past lunchtime. As a bonus, I met well-known Appalachian Studies scholar and Berea Sound Archivist Harry Rice. We, too, had a lovely talk, then the three of us did the ‘ol Kopana selfie before I left for the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen to deliver three pieces for the upcoming members’ exhibit. Shoot, my day was so good I even got my flu shot. Now, that’s a good day.
