Before we left Cannon Beach today, I took another walk. I photographed Haystack Rock again, but the view to the south of where we stayed was beautiful, too (above). Winds blowing in from the west will push fog inland. This morning, over just 30 minutes, the light and ambiance were in constant flux. Fog like this was gone in 20 minutes, then another layer moved in five minutes later; the sun came out, then went away, etc. It was interesting to watch. I thought about Jon Reynolds and his beautiful landscape photographs. He is very deliberate in his timing, and I could see how difficult that would be in this location unless you knew the weather conditions very well; Jon would conquer those just as he successfully manages celestial events. In any case, for whatever reason, probably because I know Jon’s work, this trip has made me appreciate landscape photography more than ever. Any good photograph is hard to achieve, but a good landscape? It’s things you can’t control on a global scale. For me, though, today was about enjoying the sun, sand, and wind in my hair, and appreciating others’ art. This beach, ya’ll: it’s the finest I’ve ever been to.
