Stacy Yelton and I had need for breakfast. The Ramsey’s location on old Harrodsburg Road sits just past this Christian Church “the oldest continuous congregation north of the Kentucky river.” It’s double red doors against bright white brick are striking. Note the connection to Barton Stone, founder of the Cane Ridge Meeting House. It would be interesting to learn more about their transition from baptist to Stone’s progressive Christian faith. The Great Awakening of the 1830’s was a powerful time in American protestant religion. That it emanated from central Kentucky is fascinating, particularly since today we’ve become a hotbed of conservative fundamentalism. In any case, I would love to see the inside of this church. If it’s as well tended as the out, I’m sure it’s gorgeous. It has a beautiful little meditation garden to the side, and the additions to the main sanctuary don’t detract from it at all. Did I mention how striking the red doors against white brick can be? Sometimes the best adventures are in your backyard, on the way to breakfast.
