Ohio and Oklahoma weren’t known for earthquakes, at least not until oil companies began fracking for natural gas. Now, the earth rocks every day in both states, sometimes mighty hard. There’s nothing natural about that. On the other hand, it’s completely natural, after successfully raping Kentucky of her minerals for over a century, that the frackers would be drawn to us like bees to honey. They’re here, right on cue. I try not to sound too bitter about it, but it’s hard to do sometimes. With any luck, and a lot of work, the efforts afoot to stop the oil companies, like frackfreefoothills.net, will send the fracking frackers packing. One of Kentucky’s finest potters, Berea’s Bruce Hoefer and Turning Wheel Pottery, are putting their money where their mouth is. Half the proceeds from these fantastic handmade “no fracking” mugs will be donated to the cause. I bought two. I don’t like fracking any more than I like mountaintop removal. We’re very lucky to have folks like Bruce to fuel the movement. And somehow the coffee tastes better from this mug.
