this is how we do it
I had the opportunity to join Lewis Honors College professor, Dr. Kenton Sena, and his crew to plant trees at the Rowdy Gap strip mine in Perry County. This mine is so close to my paternal family’s home that I took it personally, the strip mine and our efforts at reforestation. The program plants one million trees each year across the country, in places like this that have become barren for one reason or another, although none of those places are naturally occurring. They’re all barren from man-made causes. We weren’t the only group there today. Kids from Breathitt County and DC (yes, Washington DC) were also there. Together, we planted 4,000 native trees. It wasn’t hard, but it was hot. I’ll sleep like a baby tonight. In as little as a decade, there could be a full canopy where today there is a moonscape. I feel so good about giving back to Mother Nature
