Branford

Photos of the performance weren’t allowed, so I snapped the stage before the show. What show, you ask? Branford Marsalis! He’s only my favorite contemporary jazz musician, and with seats center stage five rows back, I could hear him breathe into the horn. I have never heard anyone play a saxophone with such finesse and control. His vibrato was amazing. His quartet was fantastic, too, and unlike the rock star he is (in my book, anyway), Marsalis stepped into the shadows and let them take the limelight. I bought tickets back in December because I told myself my 60th year would include more music. And, also, I knew if I didn’t buy the tickets then, the day would arrive and I’d find a reason not to go – like the deluge and massive flooding across the state. Nevertheless, I called my trusty musical partner, Judy, and off we went into the rain to swoon to real jazz. Not this smooth jazz crap that tries to pass for jazz, but real jazz from 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, and a lot of Keith Jarrett. If I didn’t love Branford before tonight, I would have been won over by his performance. He’s the bee’s knees.
