“Music takes the suck out of things.” ~ The Simpsons
I mentioned in an earlier post that getting to Eunice and Johnny would have been a breeze, except the last bridge at the head of Hardburly was missing. They were in the process of getting a new bridge, but the flood quickly took out the remaining lane, trapping everyone in the head of the holler. It was an easy eight-foot drop down the creek bank, so after the waters receded, residents made a set of stairs to traverse the steep bank and laid wood pallets across the water. The other side of the creek was a bit more forgiving. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, Mamaw always said. Kathryn Engle lingered at the makeshift crossing about 2/3 the way through the steps. I went back to see what she was doing and found her playing in the dirt. There was a method to her madness, however. Kathryn had spotted relics of road crews past in the remains of old pop cans and glass bottles. It was a fascinating glimpse of life in Appalachia, at least along this little creek. It was much more impressive than the photo makes it out to be.
