“At the end of the day, what really matters is that your loved ones are well, you’ve done your best, and you’re thankful for all you have.” ~ TinyBuddha
This evening I did something I never do, and I’m so glad I did. I went with Stacy to pick up her Kroger Click List order. We pulled up next to a car getting their order, and waited our turn. Soon a car horn goes off beside us. It was none other than Heidi and Riley and their car-load of groceries! What a thrilling surprise. We were supposed to meet up at Skyline Chili just weeks before the pandemic shut down the country. That obviously didn’t happen, and we had not seen one another until today. Today was also Riley’s first day of forth grade, so that made seeing him extra special, though he was pretending to be super shy. Seeing them and Stacy helped take the sting out of losing the great drummer Charlie Watts today. Folks didn’t rave about Charlie the way they rave about guys like Peart and Bonham, but Charlie’s brilliance was in his simplicity. He was a master of the rock and roll groove, so smooth you barely noticed his changes, but you felt them just the same. Over the years I grew to admire his playing. More than any other player Charlie Watts taught me to get rid of the big kit and pare down to the most basic set, and just play the song. I still \revert to my old crash-bang-boom ways sometimes, but I try to keep Charlie’s cool.
