“If I waited until I had all my ducks in a row, I’d never get across the street. Sometimes you just have to gather up what you got and make a run for it.” ~ Judge Lynn Toler

lines everywhere

Following yesterday’s post about Henry Tandy, here’s the Fayette County Courthouse he built from the Upper Street side (opposite of the cheap side). The building was renovated back in 2016 and reopened in 2018 as civic space including the Lexington-Fayette County Tourism VisitLex and Ouita Michel’s Zim’s Cafe. The renovation altered the interior to provide necessary arrangement for new business, but some elements of the original building remained, such as the very interesting brick low-height domed entryway. I wish I knew more about the original building to understand this entryway’s significance, but whatever it was, I’m glad they kept it in the finished building. It certainly stands out. In any case, this is just another example of good decision making by Lexington. Preservation of landmark properties like this increase the cultural value of an area to its residents and can raise the economic prospects around it. Preservation is good business and environmentally better for the planet.
