we also need a prosperity of kindness and decency.”

I often talk about my neighbor on facebook whom I’ve nicknamed Chainsaw Charlie. I inadvertently turned him into something of a hit with his chainsaw antics. He’s not making chainsaw art or anything cool like that. He heats his house with wood he chops himself, but he has to first chainsaw the trees into pieces small enough to chop. He’s able to do this continually because he has a friend who’s an arborist, and he delivers whole felled trees to Chainsaw Charlie’s driveway. At yesterday’s cookout, after getting a good look through the fence at the logs in said driveway, Sandy Davis turned to me and said, “I finally understand why he runs that chainsaw all the time.” Even this picture doesn’t do justice to the amount of wood waiting for his chainsaw.  And this is one of the smaller trees he’s had delivered. He annoyed me to death when I first got here, but after we got a few things worked out, I’ve come to respect his tenacity. You have to admire a man so dedicated to heating his home that he would run a chainsaw year round at all hours of the day. He overlooks the fact that he’s in the city. The rest of us try to do the same. I absolutely love people who are different for the norm, even the ones that drive me batty sometimes.
