“Overthinking is the biggest cause of unhappiness.” ~ Unknown

last song

My old high school classmate Brian Oberley died at 4am this morning. He was in a Knoxville ICU on a ventilator, but that couldn’t save him. Brian was a hoot in high school and played up the stoner kid persona to great effect. He was always smiling (maybe he wasn’t playing it up). He was very kind. He was hilariously funny. He wore a beard before it was cool (these hipster wannabes ain’t got nothing on Brian) and he loved rock and roll. I hadn’t seen him since we graduated in 1983, but we reconnected on Facebook many years ago, and I had grown fond of him all over again, more so in some ways. We had always connected over music, but Brian was so much more than the stoner kid everybody thought he was. He had a deep heart and clear vision. It broke my heart to hear the news of his passing. As I always say, ain’t none of us getting outta here alive. So tonight at rehearsal I relished my bandmates all the more, and played with Brian in mind.
