Reinette and I gave what was likely our last newspaper presentation today for the Kentucky History and Genealogy Conference at the Lexington Public Library. And wouldn’t you know, it was the best one we’ve ever done. For a couple of years now, we’ve talked to various groups and conference attendees about the newspaper program at UK Libraries and the value they have for various research endeavors, especially Reinette’s NKAA (Notable Kentucky African Americans Database). I set up the background of the program, and she hits the rest of it out of the park every time. It has been the best presentation experience I’ve ever had, bar none. Today, it was a packed house. They asked good questions, and Reinette was hilarious. She’s always funny, but she was on her A game today. Afterward, we had lunch with a fellow retired UK Libraries colleague at the nearby Athenian Grill, and that’s where I learned that Reinette has been at UK for 43 years. Like me, she is on phased retirement, but she signed up for three years, unlike my single year. I will miss our sermons about newspaper preservation, but I won’t miss her friendship because that will endure to the end of one of us, and even then it’ll go on. I have zero doubt about that, and I am eternally grateful for her friendship and collegiality.
