I’m the vice-chair of the UK CURATE committee. The name is an acronym for something (I don’t know), but in short, we help the Office of the VP for Research dispense funds to non-med colleges to assist their faculty in their research. Before I was vice chair, before I was even on the committee, I received CURATE funds for my research on Place, Identity, and Natural Disaster. This past Thursday, the committee held our annual event where deans and chairs of every college are invited to hear from some of the funding recipients and the projects the funds helped facilitate. This year was exceptionally good Above, left to right, are Adriane Grumbein, chair extraordinaire, and Jan Fernheimer who has more titles than God and also spearheads the Women in Bourbon oral history project. I’ve worked with Jan for years, but I don’t think I’ve heard her present until this event. Look at her killer cowboy boots! Adriane was so taken by them she suggested we do a cowboy boot-themed event next year. I don’t disagree. Meanwhile, you can always pick out the librarian in the crowd. Just look for the sensible shoes (so said Becky Ryder long ago, ha! – she wasn’t wrong). There are professors at UK doing incredible work, and being among them and talking about my research was not only a lesson in imposter syndrome but an honor. Truly.
