up to nothing but good
I had a great day at work. I rarely take photos of people I meet through work, let alone talk about them here, but these folks are very different from most. Doug invited me to join a talk (listen) and dine with Leora Kahn; author, teacher, and founder of Proof: Media for Social Justice at Yale University. She wrote an incredible book called When They Came to Take My Father: Voices of the Holocaust, the oral histories of which have a home with us at the Nunn Center. Leora brought along her friends and cohorts photo prof. Glenna Jennings and Human Rights prof. Joel Pruce from the University of Dayton. Together with Kahn they’ve been working on an incredible social justice course now coming into its third year. Their students are so lucky: they have the opportunity to visit sites of social unrest such as Ferguson, Missouri and The Mexican/American boarder at El Paso. This year they’re exploring the water crisis in Martin County, KY and the striking miners in Harlan. If they had been unkind people I probably would have still enjoyed hearing about the work they’re doing because it’s super important and very intense, but as my good fortune would have it, they were anything but jerks. They couldn’t have been more kind. I saw in all three of them kindred creative spirits. I could have talked to them all day. It was my lucky day for sure. I hope we have the opportunity to visit again.
