“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.”

My boss knows me pretty well, and thus, the giving (getting and spending) of the annual Joseph-Beth Bookseller gift card. Last year I got a book that I would have never bought myself: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. It’s a young adult book, but I’d read so many good things about it I just couldn’t resist. I loved it it so much I bought the second in the series. I did the same thing this Christmas: I bought a book I would not normally buy for myself. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness begins in the Oxford University Library with the discovery of a rare manuscript. How much more up my alley could it be? I’d been intrigued upon its release in 2011, but since I tend to read spiritual and historical non-fiction, or hysterically funny Christopher Moore-ish fiction, I never picked it up. I trust it will be as good as last year’s pick, and I’m grateful to have a boss kind enough to give me something I will actually enjoy. And whose line should come open for me but my old friend Bobby Ray. He is one of the nicest men I have ever known, and it just made my day to have a chat with him, short as it was. I win Saturday!
