“Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.” ~ Anthony Bourdain
I had a great end to the week made all the better in part by my lunch buddy, Crystal. It was a beautiful albeit windy day in the Bluegrass, so we walked off-campus for lunch. It turned out to be a fabulous idea. Not only did we get something out of the ordinary (for us) to eat, we also had a great, long, uninterrupted conversation. I don’t know that we solved the world’s problems, but we sure had fun talking about how we could. Crystal has never seemed ten years my junior. She’s always been knowledgeable about the world that preceded her. One of the things we talked about is how so many younger folks we know don’t seem to recognize how far society has evolved over the last 50 years. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but lordy, we’ve made incredible strides in our lifetimes. Yet, we middle-agers are given little credit for our forward-thinking by the self-righteous youngsters. Ultimately, it didn’t matter as we said Towanda! on our way out the door, secure in the knowledge that we’re older and have more insurance. It was a really good day.
