“Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power.” ~ William James

One of the tallest buildings in the city is the Patterson Office Tower (POT) on UK’s campus. It houses primarily offices, with a few classrooms and conference spaces here and there. The mezzanine level used to have a small restaurant, but now it’s the post office. Years ago, there was a water fountain in front of the building, and I believe it surrounded the President Patterson sculpture. You can imagine how well a water feature on a college campus went over, and I think after years of repairs from constant sudsy soap events, they finally pulled the plug, so to speak, and filled in the pool with brick. There’s very little water anywhere in Lexington; over time, they’ve reduced it even more, not just on campus. Not sure what that’s about. The POT is tall enough to create its own wind vortex, so it’s like walking through constant wind: refreshing in summer, brutal in winter. Kind of like higher ed!
