BFF Marie Dale loves, loves, loves BTS, the Korean pop band with seven singers. About a month ago, she discovered their concert would air at a local theater. Enter me and Crystal, faithful companions to our beloved Marie. It was an adventure to see a band I couldn’t name a single song for. It was worth it seeing the joy on Marie’s face. Plus, this particular theater had recliners, so it’s not like hanging out was much of a hardship. Most BTS songs are in Korean, putting a different spin on the music for me. It’s like listening to an instrumental with an instrument you can’t quite make out. The biggest surprise was that much of what they do is Rap. I didn’t see that coming. Rap is difficult without the lyrics. I think of Rap as folk music, the tune – or beat, as the case may be – is just one part of the mix that hinges on the lyrics. If you can’t understand the words, its not much of a song. I also found it intriguing that the filmmakers never showed a single face in the audience. Not one. They cleverly blurred the audience with a tilt-shift effect the few times they panned to the audience, but that wasn’t often. The musicians were rarely shown either. It was very much about the seven singers. Marie bopped along throughout the show. Mission accomplished. I would totally do it again.
