from one birthday to the next
I stopped by Judy’s to return her copy of Dead Man Blues, having read it almost in its entirety at Sunday’s ER visit with Shero. To my surprise, Judy had something for me, too. I hadn’t loaned her anything. She handed me a birthday present. It was far too cold to open it in the car, but at home, I discovered a plethora of gifts in that single box. One of the wonderful treats inside was this tea towel on the right: “Don’t give up. But you can totally take a break if you want.” A suitable motto. I loved it so much that I displayed it beside my all-time favorite tea towel, which is one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten: Crystal’s Christmas gift from probably five years ago, with no small amount of an inside joke. Now, I have tons of inspiration staring at me when I cook, and I remain eternally grateful to the friends who feel like family, who shower me with gifts and kindness every day.
