For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out, and everything changes. To someone who doesn’t understand growth, it would look like complete destruction.” ~ Cynthia Occelli

Mamaw used to say that when she was a young girl on Mine Fork (Kentucky) the winters were far worse, and far longer, than they are now. She said it wasn’t uncommon to get 16″ of snow in early winter that stayed on the ground until late spring. It was bitterly cold. That rarely happens now. We’re more frequented by ice storms. Those can be far worse. Worse for our safety, worse for our health, and worst of all for our ecology. Mounting evidence says we’ve slowly killed our planet: ice instead of snow, warm instead of cold. Yet, in this self-annihilation I see a beauty that is purely spectacular. Water from the sky becomes solid, smooth, and contoured to every surface it touches. Warming fractures it into snowflake patterns: no two cracks are the same. The buds on my apple tree become bubble wrapped presents just waiting for spring to rip them open. I pray that our seed has come undone because we, the human race, are growing, and that we will blossom into a delicious fruit before it’s too late. I will appreciate the beauty. That is my job for today.
