pre-storm storm
The snow began falling at a steady rate around 9 AM, and continued through noon, but by 3:30 this afternoon, the dreaded low pushed north to change the snow to freezing rain and sleet. This was expected, but we had so much snow, five inches or more, that I held out hope for no ice at all. Alas, the forecasters appear correct this time, and the freezing rain continues. I am cautiously pleased that the power is still on, though far from celebratory. Lexington has not had a good track record when it comes to ice storms. More than once, we’ve been left in the dark. In all cases thus far, those outages have come when the temps were tolerable, but this time is different. Temps are dropping to sub-zero, leaving the ice pack in place, and by tomorrow night, when the storm is finally over, we’ll be frozen solid with more snow than we have now. This would be a highly dangerous time for the power to go out. People will freeze to death in their beds. Still, I am beyond grateful for the linemen out there keeping us going and for the street sweepers and road crews for the safe passage of emergency vehicles, at the very least. Ya’ll bundle up out there.
