birthday now?

This morning, I received a message via Facebook wishing me a happy birthday. It’s not my birthday. This evening, I got a phone call wishing me a happy birthday. It’s not my birthday. Both instances were from people who have known me for 35+ years and 50 years, respectively. They know exactly when my birthday is, and they always reach out to me on the day. So, what’s happened this year? I remember thinking when the insurrection happened on January 6, “Great. Now, that’s all anybody’s going to remember from now on.” I believe I even told someone soon after that I wish the insurrection hadn’t happened, and if it had to happen, I wish it hadn’t happened so close to my birthday, because it spoils the fun of my Elvis and Bowie birthday jokes. What’s today? That’s right: not my birthday! Of course, this is just one way to look at it. Instead, I choose to look at it like this: both of these people love me so much, they wanted to be sure to wish me a happy birthday. There are people in this world who don’t have a single person to wish them a happy birthday. I’ve got at least two. Lest we forget that Jen Reynolds’ “do not open until Jan 8th” card has been waiting for several days. The surprise I got in the mail today came from rental sister Kelly, who, despite her personal traumas on January 6, completely unrelated to an insurrection, still managed to think of me and send a gift. Do you know how lucky I am to have people like her, and Jen, and the two unnamed friends in my life to remind me that I am loved and thought of? Really, really, really lucky and I hope I never take that -or them- for granted. I am the luckiest woman on the planet.
