facelift

In 2020, I posted about Pence Hall and how, 23 years earlier, Kevin Johnson and I helped renovate her. It was Kevin way more than me. I quit after a day because we had to start at 8 a.m., and since I was still playing a lot of music back then, early mornings were a hard stop. Kevin and I talked about that summer recently, and he really loved the work he did to bring the old building back to life. Now, 27 years after that renovation, the ‘ol gal is getting another major makeover. They moved the former tenant, the College of Design, to the newly renovated Reynold’s Building (now called the Gray Building), which left the builders free to give it a facelift. I’ve seen mockups of the finished product. A bit underwhelming, but okay. They’re moving the entrance to the back, and the back is what is in the photo above. There’s been a theme for glass facades around campus, particularly for old buildings being renovated, and I’m just not a fan. I’ve seen worse, but I don’t believe the designs will age well. They’re window-dressing more than utilitarian. Anyway, I love Pence Hall, and I hope she will provide many more years of service to students who will adore her as much as me and Kevin.
