“One of the greatest luxuries in life isn’t a bigger house, a designer handbag, or a five-star holiday. It’s a calm nervous system.” ~ Unknown

whose birthday

Tonight we celebrated Missy’s 57th birthday with delicious food and the requisite birthday sundae. One of us saw only the sundae, not Mimi’s special day. It’s sometimes hard for me to believe how old Missy is because, to me, she has always been the most adorable petite white-blond curly-headed toddler she was when I first remember her. Kam looks amazingly like her at this age. Somewhere in this house is a picture of us with Hero, Aunt Lois, and Uncle Darrel. I had just started first grade, so Missy was two-ish. Petite and shiny white, I tell you, like a China doll. Lois, Missy, and Galen had come up to the mountains from Lexington for the weekend, as they so often did, and Hero, Shero, and I went to see them at Mamaw and Papaw Terry’s house on Railroad Fork. I had the worst haircut imaginable in that picture. Shero thought she was doing such a good job, but I was a cosmetologist’s nightmare. I think that haircut traumatized me for life. And there was Melissa in her mother’s arms, looking like a pure angel, while I was draped over Hero’s shoulders like a wet towel, holding my drawing that looked about as bad as my haircut. Beside us stood Darrel, a gangly teen making a silly face. In fact, he still makes that face, sometimes on purpose. Sometimes not. It is a great memory. Someday Kamden will realize what a special Mimi he’s got, but one thing’s for sure right now: he adores her. We all do. Those white curls just turned gray.
