The Idle Hour Country Club has consistently put on the best fireworks show in Lexington for over 20 years. That’s right. The city of Lexington has fireworks, but the country club actually does a better job of it. Hundreds gather on the lawn of what is now the old Shriner’s Hospital and wait for the sun to set, entertaining themselves with sparklers and weird glow-in-the-dark things you can throw around. Dad and I joined family and friends for the event this year. Cousin Missy brought delicious home made treats while her hubby Mike settled in next to dad. It was, as expected, a great fireworks display. Everyone was friendly. All the kids had a blast. I was especially pleased to see a mix of people on the lawn; from the young Muslim couple with their children to the large Indian family in traditional dress to the Spanish speaking guys that politely passed me on the sidewalk. We were America the Beautiful tonight. Best of all I got to spend it with dad; a real American hero.
