“Compassion springs from the heart as pure, refreshing water, healing the wounds of life.” ~ Thich Nhat Hahn

Every year for the last, I don’t know – ten years or more – Stacy and I go to the Berea Craft Festival at Indian Fort Theater on the first of the three days, which is a Friday. I take the day off, we start with breakfast at Cracker Barrell, then go to the festival for several hours, maybe go eat again, then go home. This year we switched to Saturday so Kelly could go with us and we’re staying at the historic Boone Tavern because, why not play hometown tourist? We’ve done it a few times this year already. So, we did the craft festival, rain, humidity, and all, then we had dinner in the tavern. It was still pretty early when we finished but most of the local shops had closed. We were wandering around thinking of a way to kill the last daylight hours when we realized the new Buc-ee’s was just up the road. Well, it turned out to be the highlight of the day. I don’t think Stacy or Kelly believed me when I told them how over the top it was. I hadn’t been to it yet either, but I was familiar with the chain in Texas. Needless to say, they believe me now. Buc-ee’s is one of the most American things ever. There’s not another country that would have something so huge yet practical and downright fun. The funniest part of all was Kelly’s sheer delight at the Bucky statue located at the entrance. A stranger, a woman, saw us talking about Bucky and kindly offered to take our picture with him. As she was taking our picture, another woman came along and offered to take the picture so she, the stranger, could get in it with us. The second photo was our reaction to that offer. It really was hilarious. All this happened before we even stepped foot inside. I’m telling you, it was a hoot, and Kelly was tickled to death as we drove into the sunset. Yes, friends, it was a great day.
