“A healer is someone who seeks to be the light that they wished they’d had in their darkest moments.” ~ Alan Watts

the hand off

Today was a long, strange, yet somehow cathartic day. This is a very bad photo recreation of the moment Crystal brought Doug’s new album artwork back after she scanned it. She had bowed when she handed it back to him, and from where I was sitting, it was a hilarious exchange, as if she were handing over a royal scepter. From an artist’s point of view, she kind of was. It was the artwork Doug and King Library Press Director Kadin Henningsen put together and printed for his album. Doug and I had been talking about the album earlier, and he’d just finished telling me about the cover’s design and print process when Crystal returned. That led us into talking about some of my old band memories, and who should call me tonight, but old bandmate Kiya. We talked for two hours about… You guessed it, old band days. It was equal parts trauma and gratitude. Such a strange emotional combination. But despite any trauma it caused decades ago, it has served to make me a better person. Or at least I hope it has. I’ve tried to make it so, and talking through so much of what happened to us helped me see I have made some progress, thankfully. One doesn’t always have the gift of reflection with someone with whom they shared such a life-altering experience, and a gift is exactly what tonight’s call was. I’m grateful for all of it.
