park at your own risk
For the life of me, I can’t remember who I was talking to recently about this parking lot. If all one sees is this sign, it looks like it belongs to the Newman Center, but it’s actually one of UK’s employee lots, that is, until 5 pm. They made the change (made a financial deal, I’m sure) some years after I started working at UK, so you can imagine my surprise when I went to the office after hours one evening, pulled into the lot to park in my usual spot, only to learn that it falls under the Newman Center’s control after five. The kind attendant let me park that night after I gave him what for. We pay nearly $500 a year for our parking permits – some pay higher rates for more premium parking – and I took offense that my hard-earned money afforded me surprise temporary access. Everything is temporary, even if you pay big bucks for it. In any case, my point is that the attendant was kind even if the arrangement was not, and I hope I do the same for others when given the chance.
