The sky is not my limit…I am.” ~ T.F. Hodge

Several weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, someone, probably the city, projects shamrocks onto this downtown building. It overlooks the small park beside the public library and the eternal flames devoted to fallen police and fire heros. My Irish ancestors were in America long before the Irish famine of 1840. In fact, all of my ancestors – Irish, Scottish, British, German, French, Scandinavian, even Native American – have been here so long that any holdovers from each respective culture were long ago absorbed by their greater American experience. There’s no cultural family lore to speak of save for a few Native American things. It’s all very interesting, from a historical and cultural perspective. I’ve never celebrated St. Patrick’s Day beyond wearing something green. Next year I think I’ll change that, and really get to know my Irish roots a bit more.
