“We tend to think of age only in time, but I don’t think it has much to do with time at all; there’s a whole load of other things. I’ve met 16-year-olds who are old and 90-year-olds who are young.”

These youngsters are a joy. They’re a joy to each other, and they’re a joy to be around. Photographed here at James’ visitation nearly two weeks ago, John Crouch is at this moment convalescing from a replaced knee with the help of his wife, Nila. If you haven’t been keeping a score card on the Terry clan, I’ll remind you that Nila is the widow of my dad’s brother, Ralph Paul, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969. Some years later she married John. Many decades passed before we reconnected and I had the opportunity to meet John. I’ve gotten to know him over the last year or so, and I must say that I absolutely adore him. He exudes a gentle spirit. He’s always smiling. He’s kind, courteous, and very thoughtful. He also very obviously loves Nila, as she does him. I don’t believe I could have picked a better fella for her than John. They recently celebrated their 44th anniversary. Here’s to 44 more (unlikely at this age, but hey, medical technology is advancing every day, so who can say!) He’s a keeper.
