“There are seasons in life. Don’t ever let anyone try to deny you the joy of one season because they believe you should stay in another season… Listen to yourself. Trust your instincts. Keep your perspective.” ~ Jane Clayson

The compressed sociology course with Kathryn Engle drew to a close with this evening’s lecture by Dr Karida Brown. Dr Brown wrote a compelling book called Gone Home: Race and Roots Through Appalachia. It was a fine way to end what has turned out to be one of the best educational experiences I’ve ever had. It was the perfect combination of experiential learning and classroom work. Plus, I can’t say enough about my classmates. Technically, I am old enough to be their grandmother (that’s scary), but instead of treating me like some old gal, they embraced me and asked me questions and just made me feel incredibly welcomed. I think that’s a reflection on Kathryn and the kind of scholars she draws into her classroom. She’s a great big heart in a little package. Kathryn Engle: she is a quality human being, and anybody would be lucky to have her as a friend, teacher, mentor, director, chief cook and bottle washer.
