Annie Bassoni, flanked by her mother (left) and aunt (right), today gave a moving speech before she passed the torch to the 2013 staff recipient of the Sarah Bennett Holmes award. The award is given to one staff and one faculty member “for their contributions to issues that affect women at UK and across the commonwealth and who promote the growth and well-being of other women.” Nobody deserved this award more than Annie (the 2012 winner). She has helped countless people around the Bluegrass. In her speech, she recognized her mom and grandmother as deep inspirations; told how she has gotten through a life that hasn’t always been kind; and considered why she was given a second chance when others haven’t been as fortunate. From my point of view that answer is simple: the world needs her light. I sure do. I am so lucky to call her friend, and more proud of her than words can say. Well done, Annie. Now, you are the inspiration.
