On a whim, Mama Heis got tickets to see Earth Wind & Fire in Louisville tonight. She took Crystal and me with her. Come to find out, Earth Wind & Fire is her all-time favorite band. The weather was perfect, the dinner was fabulous (a Mexican joint called Metztli with the best chicken street tacos imaginable), and the show was nothing short of pure joy. There were twelve guys on that stage who looked genuinely happy to be there, be together, be playing music for people who loved what they were doing. We should all have jobs that make us that happy. And the three oldest, original members, now 74 and 75 years old? They’re great. Verdine White, the bassist, remains one of the best bass players on the planet. What a whimsical and fantastic evening with two of my favorite people.
