“Happiness is not the absence of problems, it’s the ability to deal with them.”
~ Steve Maraboli
I have been blessed with extraordinarily gifted friends all my life. Catherine Brereton is no exception. She graduates Summa Cum Laude this Sunday. As a Gaines Fellow with a double major in writing and gender/women’s studies, she has won every top prize there was to win in her senior year; six in all. All this she has done while raising two teenage girls. Plus, what the graduate school has put forth to entice her into their program is itself high praise. Yet, knowing Catherine, none of this is a surprise. She is a serene woman. No word is wasted. Everything she says is sensitive and meaningful. Even her procrastination is knitted with thoughtful purpose. She met Stacy Yelton and I for lunch at K-Lair since she had never been there (and as a student, she was honor bound to try it just once). She brought along her good friend, Carol, who came from England to visit family and attend Catherine’s graduation. What a great friend that is, and what a delight it was to meet her. What a beautiful lunch we shared, albeit K-Lair cuisine. Way to go, Catherine. I couldn’t be more proud.
