“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday, and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and and mostly live.” ~ Dalai Lama

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church sits just off Highway 68 between the Kentucky River and Shakertown. Established in 1839, this little church perched atop the ridge has a view of Kentucky farmland that stretches for miles. It’s simple structure is fitting for being so near Shaker Village; the inside as effortless as the out.

I didn’t notice the old wooden cross in the yard until I’d walked around a bit. It was nestled near an old rock wall buried in the shadows of a hackberry tree. I always wonder who makes up the congregation of these rural churches. I imagine them mostly demure, hard-working women with salt-of-the-Earth farmer husbands tucked quietly into this corner and that. Whatever the case, I like the simplicity of their church under a May sky.
