There are several historical markers near Camp Nelson. One interesting thing I learned from them is that, upon emancipation in 1865, over 23,000 slaves were freed at Camp Nelson. The figure is mind blowing. I simply cannot imagine living in a world where one man is enslaved to another, and I don’t ever want to know what it’s like. Everything’s not perfect in our country, I know that, but I’m deeply grateful for what we have that is right.
