“I was reminded of the four Immutable Laws of the Spirit: Whoever is present are the right people. Whenever it begins is the right time. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened. And when it’s over, it’s over. ” ~ Anne Lamott

brothers

Today, we buried the Gross Brothers’ stepdad, Fred Linkous, who died suddenly last Monday after a fall. Fred and Pat, the brothers’ mother, had been married for 37 years and came with two step-siblings. He was buried in a gorgeous cemetery in the middle of nowhere, Wolfe County, overlooking a small valley that was as fragrant and green as any could ever be. I’ve known the brothers and Pat long before Fred entered the picture, and his loss is one of many tragedies we’ve seen together. Pat calls me her “other child.” Timmy and Hero did many things together, from trading guns and knives to skeet shooting and fishing. They were very good friends, and I’m more than pleased to carry on that tradition (although I’m not much on shooting skeet). Greg spent so much time with me in high school, and afterward, we’re as tight as if we were siblings. I’m honored that Pat and Tim (and Tim’s incredible wife, Tammy) have taken me in. Spending the day with all of them and hearing so many stories I’d never heard was a privilege I wouldn’t have missed for anything.  And near the end of the day, a rainbow appeared as we headed back home. A fitting end to the day.
