Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.

Doug had to clean his office. This afternoon I walked in to find him sweating, sleeves rolled up, blue latex gloves on both hands, and Elvis. Turns out Elvis, the decanter, had been there all along. (Does this speak to my inattention, or the piles of stuff in Doug’s office?) Doug then shared a story about his Elvis decanter. He’s working late at night in the office. He’s alone in the building. He’s writing at his desk. Suddenly, breaking the silence, music begins to play from Elvis. I don’t remember what Doug said it was; Love Me Tender maybe. Stranger still, it was Elvis’ birthday. I didn’t tell Doug that’s also my birthday. In any case, Doug promptly, swiftly, and without hesitation, left the building. Elvis played on. I got my camera. (full disclosure, Elvis isn’t just a decanter, but also a music box….though it’s completely unclear how it played by itself <insert creepy music, Elvis style>)
