how we visit in 2020

Mike, Missy, and Macie dropped by today for a short visit. Sadly, I didn’t think to grab the camera as Mike sat behind the refurbed Ludwigs. Nevertheless, it was exciting to have someone to share their radiance with me; someone who understands the significance of their resurrection and appreciates the beauty of sound. I’ve never had an uninspired talk with Mike about music, and I’m super excited that he and his band – which includes Macie from time to time – are planning their first public performance in January if Covid allows. You can bet that’ll make the outhouse.

We made our way next door to see the parental unit who suffer from more isolation than most given their age and conditions. Seeing family was the highlight of their day and mine. I often don’t realize how starved I am for conversation until I have one with someone I don’t see often. For mom and dad the effects of isolation are much, much worse, particularly for dad who suffers from dementia. Socialization for someone like him is vitally important. It helps stave off depression and it engages the brain in a multitude of ways that daily life doesn’t generally offer. Plus, he loves his family above all else. It becomes increasingly difficult for him to understand why they can’t visit more often, why they visit with masks on, or why they visit without coming inside. Nevertheless, it makes a big difference when they do come by in whatever manner the virus allows. He might forget they were here within 10 minutes, but deep in his brain he knows they’ve been here. Plus, he adores Mike, as you can see, and that’s important, if fleeting. I’m eternally grateful for Mike, Missy, and Macie.
