Decades ago, when we were living in Tucson, dad took to the cowboy look like a pig to mud. In particular, he fancied the handlebar mustache. He grew an impressive handlebar mustache, and kept it waxed for years after. As fancy as his mustache was, it didn’t curl quite as much as this trumpeter’s. Still, I’ll never see a curly mustache without thinking of dad and his handlebar mustache. One of these days I’ll dig up some old pictures and show you Shorty as the Marlboro Man. You’ll be impressed.
