Long Beach is home of the Queen Mary, a luxury ocean liner that played a prominent role in WWII. We sailed close to her on our harbor cruise. She sits sandwiched between a captured Russian sub, and a Princess Cruise ship. Also nearby is Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose hanger. It’s a giant dome you can’t miss (in the bottom photo, the top is visible between the left and middle smokestacks). If I had it to do over again, I would have booked my final night in Long Beach on the Queen Mary, which is a hotel with several restaurants and rooms suitable for weddings and other events.

I’ve been learning a lot about the Queen Mary. She set sail on her Maiden voyage in 1936. Three years later she was converted to haul U.S. troops fighting in the European theater of WWII. They painted her grey, which earned her the nickname “grey ghost.” She carried over 16,000 troops in a single voyage, a record that still holds. She also set and held speed records for a time, which made her the perfect troop transport. After the war she was repainted and refitted for public transportation. But by 1965, air travel had nearly bankrupted seafaring travel companies, and the Queen Mary was sold to Long Beach where she has lived since 1967. I’m glad the Queen Mary came to live at her American cousin’s shore. I’d really love to take one of her paranormal tours. I’d settle for a normal tour. She’s a beaut,
