Sunday, we passed this half-deconstructed house with a herd of goats asleep at the front gate. We didn’t have time to stop, but we went back today. At first we were disappointed because the goats weren’t at the gate, though their awesome companion/guard dog was. However, as soon as we pulled into the drive they emerged, making their way around and through the house one at a time as if on cue. There’s a term in historic preservation called “Adaptive Reuse.” This house is an example of the term, though not exactly an example the academics would use. In any case, the goats tenderly making their way through the debris was hilarious, even better than if they’d been waiting at the gate. Pretty perfect timing really. I hope the owners leave what’s left of the house standing so the goats can continue to appear as if by magic and make passersby giggle like I did.
