When Jeff found out I was going to Baltimore for the Oral History Association Conference, he told me to find and have a Natty Boh, the colloquial for National Bohemian beer. Jeff’s oldest brother used to live in Baltimore. The two went to many a Baltimore Orioles games with, no doubt, many a Natty Boh. I was on a mission. Dinner with the Ritchie’s did not present the Natty Boh experience, but dinner with Andy at the hotel last night did! Even if I hadn’t tried the beer (though I did), I would have loved the can. The can and the taste reminded me of Pittsburg’s Iron City Beer, which I first encountered in 1985. Sports and beer-loving towns like Baltimore and Pittsburg are pretty great. Baltimore has been in the news a lot lately for increased crime, and I don’t doubt it’s bad, but I didn’t encounter anything negative in Baltimore. Just the opposite. And now, I’ve had a Natty Boh with a good burger and laughs with my sweet, sweet friend, Andy. Mission accomplished.
