“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.” ~ John Steinbeck
I had a minute to drive through Jackson yesterday. I did a load of research on the town based on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. Most of the town burned in 1913. The Guerrant Memorial Presbyterian Church, originally constructed of brick, was rebuilt on the same footprint using stone. Down the hill, the Baptist church, which was also made of brick and burned, was rebuilt on the same site, again with brick, but with little setback, hugging the corner of Broadway and Main. These were the only shots I had time for, but I’m making it a point to go back and perambulate around town. It’s a fascinating place beyond its reputation (although that’s fascinating, too), and I’d like to dive deeper into its built environment. You can read more about the church’s founder, fire, and resurrection here.
