“When someone says ‘You can’t do that,’ do it twice and take pictures.” ~ Unknown
You know that saying, “Do one thing everyday that scares you?” I took it to heart. I joined the First Presbyterian Choir. This is no ordinary choir. They are one of the reasons I fell in love with First Pres that first service close to 20 years ago now. Plus, Marlon Hurst and Terry Keys are two of my favorite people on the planet. They make me feel valued and loved and any chance to be in their company makes the worst day better. Well, the whole choir treated me like that tonight. They welcomed me as warmly as they possibly could and I made new friends immediately. The reason I’ve hesitated joining all these years is because I can’t read music. I understand concepts, and can chicken pick my way through a few bars on piano, but all my musicality is by ear. I had gotten somewhat okay at sight reading drum charts many years ago, but even that has faded by now. This choir ad-libs nothing, and Marlon as director is utterly amazing. I mean flat out ah-maze-ing. For the first time I saw it all from the other side, and I had a hard time keeping up just for listening. I was surrounded by intensely beautiful voices. It’s going to take me a while to get used to following music in a different way, but I’ll get the hang of it, and my fellow choir people will help me. They already have. I can’t begin to tell you how important this was for me, and how blessed I feel by their kindness.
